Our first day in Kyoto, we realized that pedestrians are the minority. Walking down the sidewalks, we had to accustom ourselves to looking over our shoulder every 30 secs to avoid getting run over by bikes! Especially on the sidewalks around the university, we were lost in a sea of bicycles like I'd never seen before.

So yesterday we bought used bikes for around 6,000 yen each. On the suggestion of a friendly labmate, we leisurely pedaled down alongside Tetsugaku no michi or Philosopher's Walk, a canal lined with cherry blossoms just east of Kyodai.

Beautiful!

And the best part? We didn't have to wait in the snaking line up to get back on a bus afterwards. Hooray bikes!
